10 Songs We're Loving Right Now

The Whiskey 10 for 5/1

Wanna know what I’m going nuts over right now? Check out these tunes.

  1. Telefon Tel Aviv – “You Are the Worst Thing in the World” – It’s a bummer that Charles Cooper recently died, but if you’re gonna go, go with something like their latest (and possibly last) album, Immolate Yourself. Check out this bit of electronica from Chicago. You won’t regret it.
  2. Here We Go Magic “Fangela” – Who are these guys and why do they sound so good? It’s as if Simon and Garfunkel skipped every decade after the ’60s and landed in the 2000s. Great songwriting that’ll find you vibrating along the skipping bassline. Sounds like childhood but better.
  3. She Wants Revenge “Checking Out” – Sure they sound like ’80s post-punk favorites but who can complain when it’s done well? The band really comes into their own with this track off of This is Forever.
  4. The Virgins “Rich Girls” – The Virgins come through with another track that we’re also late on. Oh well. Get over it. Maybe you haven’t heard this quirky little number yet (where have you been?) but if you’re in a good mood and feel like enjoying the sun with a soundtrack to cut through the heat, then here you go. Good times.
  5. Yeasayer “2080″ – Seems like CSNY has been making the rounds on the impressionalbe minds of musicians who grew up in the ’80s and ’90s. This song will hold you over while awaiting their next release. Here’s the thing this was a really tough song to choose because there are so many great tracks from this album. Holy moly!
  6. Yeah Yeah Yeahs “Dragon Queen” – Really? Do I need to say anything else? I’ve been jamming to this song for weeks but – shhhh – don’t tell Karen O (that darling nightingale) that I heard this album a month before the offical release date. It’s quite different from their other work but not different like Styx’s “Mr. Roboto”. Different like Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus”. Enjoy. Tell them Large Marge sentcha.
  7. The Horrors “Mirror’s Image” – OK, luckily I didn’t have to go too far to find a great track on their album, Primary Colours. “Mirror’s Image” is the dog’s bollocks and if you’re upset with Bauhaus for not making our dreams of a permanent reunion realized (although it was too much of a fantasy anyway), then take a gander at these boys from the dear old UK. I’m not saying they can replace Bauhaus. I’m just saying they’re damn good.
  8. Bloc Party “Intimacy” – Fuck it. I’m late on this one and who cares. How many people make it to the last track on album anyway. Well, in case you didn’t, then you missed out on this one. It’s a fun tune that utilizes all of Bloc Party’s force into one little neat three minute+ track. Get your dancing shoes on. It’s time to go out.
  9. Entrance “Grim Reaper Blues” – Has a song ever kicked your ass before? Well, I got my ass kicked by Entrance’s “Grim Reaper Blues”. It’s not a warning. I’m trying to make it more appealing. Miss Led Zeppelin? No worries. Entrance has your fix.
  10. The Fall “Hit the North (Part 1) – A little anthemic post-punk fun. Stick your ears into the speakers and do a shot every time you hear the chorus go like this: “Hit the north.” Enjoy some old stuff for a change.
